BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Lockheed and Rolls Royce jointly launched the L-1011 on 29
March, 1968. First flight was on 17 November, 1970 powered
by RR RB211-22B turbofan engines.
On 14 April, 1972, certification was granted. The first
revenue service was flown by Eastern Airlines on 26 April,
1972.
A maximum of 400 passengers can be seated in high density
economy class configurations.
The longer range L-1011-100, with additional fuel, was
certified at a maximum take-off weight some 8 percent
greater than that of the L-1011-1. To provide increased
performance, the L-1011-200 was developed and powered with
RR RB211-524 engines. The first L-1011-200, equipped with
-524 engines, was flown on 10 April, 1976, and was certified
on 26 April, 1977. The first production L-1011-200 aircraft
entered service in mid-1977.
L-1011-250:
Modification kits were developed by Lockheed of California
used initially by Delta Airlines to modify and upgrade a
limited number of the Delta L-1011 aircraft to L-1011-250
with 496,000 lb. take-off weight and engine change to
RB211-524, 50,000 lb. thrust.
L-1011-500:
A long range version of the L-1011 the L-1011-500 has 50,000
lb. thrust RB211-524B or -524B4 engines installed and the
fuselage length was reduced by 13 ft. 6 in. The L-1011-500
allows for 222 economy class passengers or a maximum of 330
passengers in a high density layout. The wingtip
extensions/automatic alleron system, and automatic brakes
were included on the L-1011-500 in late 1979.
